The First Nations Northern Housing conference presented Batchewana First Nation with the 2013 Community Innovation Housing Award
Description (Service) Addresses and acts upon all housing issues and related programs and requests 
  • Ensures that housing issues are effectively managed 
  • Provides recommendations and changes to the housing policy 
  • Receives and reviews applications for renovations, new housing units, housing loans and housing renovation loans 
  • Reviews rents to ensure payments are made  
  • Arranges inspections of rental units and community houses for maintenance, repairs and renovations 
  • Carries out annual maintenance and repairs on behalf of tenants and ensures work is completed 
  • Provides assistance with applications to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for funding programs such as Ontario Renovates (formerly RRAP and HASI) 
  • Provides assistance in securing funding for rent-to-own housing through CMHC
Oversees and manages the following programs: 
Batchewana First Nation Turn Key Program 
Allows the homeowner to pay their mortgage to the Batchewana First Nation (BFN) office until the mortgage is paid in full, at which time the BFN will issue the homeowner a Certificate of Possession (CP) 
Rankin Reserve Community Services Rental Units (RRCS) 
  • Provides rental units to community members 
  • Consists of 54 rental units, including one and two bedroom apartments and three-bedroom single dwellings
Renovation Program 
Offers BFN members living on the Reserve a renovation loan up to $20,000 to renovate their home 
Royal Bank Mortgage Program 
  • Provides a letter of verification to BFN members for them to attend the Royal Bank to apply for a mortgage 
  • Enables the band member to build their own home with the Chief and Council as guarantors
Also manages: 
Elders' Complex 
  • Provides rental units for community elders in one apartment building 
  • Consists of 6 one-bedroom units and 4 two-bedroom units

Eligibility Members of Batchewana First Nation 
Renovation Program 
Requires that the applicant meet the Batchewana First Nation (BFN) criteria and be approved by Chief and Council; borrower must transfer the Certificate of Possession (CP) to the BFN until the loan is paid in full 
Royal Bank Mortgage Program 
Chief and Council will only guarantee the mortgage if individual meets banks criteria 
NOTE: All delinquent accounts must be paid in full or eviction process will occur
  • Copy of the housing policy and all related building applications/housing forms available at the Band Office 
  • Contact the Housing Department for registration in all programs
