Description (Service)
  • Provides services to the public through promotion, education and enforcement of pertinent legislation 
  • Investigates food borne illnesses and outbreaks, and food related consumer complaints 
  • Issues special Occasion Food Permits 
  • Facilitates the Food Handler Training Courses
Emergency Response 
  • Identifies health hazards and takes appropriate action  
  • Ensures continued public health services are delivered during a health hazard event 
  • Oversees the Community Emergency Response Plans
Infection Control in Institutions 
  • Inspects group housing facilities  
  • Works together with day nurseries, hospitals, nursing homes, and homes for the aged to ensure that infection control programs are in place 
  • Inspects annually boarding houses, migrant housing, and residential facilities for older adults and those requiring special care to ensure provision of safe food, safe drinking water and sanitary facilities
Food Safety 
  • Delivers and enforces the Food Safety Program 
  • Inspects public food premises 
  • Recalls food
New Food Premises 
  • Evaluates plans for new and renovated food premises to ensure compliance with pertinent legislation  
  • Provides an initial inspection once the premise is at operational capacity
Health Hazard Investigation 
  • Prevents, eliminates and/or decreases the effects of health hazards with definite or potential health implications
Rabies Control and Investigations of Animal Bites 
  • Investigates every animal bite with human exposure within 18 hours 
  • Ensures suspected animals are confined for observation
Safe Water 
  • Ensures all water is safe to drink 
  • Ensures that public pools and public beach waters are safe for recreational use
Sewage Inspection 
  • Ensures that the installation of private sewage disposal systems comply with Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code Act, SO 1992
