  • The Cree people of the James/Hudson Bay lowlands refer to the waterways that make up their traditional territory as Weeneebayko 
  • Moose Factory is an island and only accessible by water in the spring, summer and fall seasons; ice road in the winter months and helicopter during break-up and freeze-up 
  • WAHA also manages an inventory of 150 houses and a small fleet of boats to house health-care professionals and provide transportation to and from the mainland; it also finances air charters and medivac services, ferrying patients, doctors and other health-care providers between Kingston and Moosonee and up and down the coast

Agency Services
Description (Service) Serves as an integrated First Nations Regional Health Authority 
  • Oversees the medical services and health facilities in communities of the James Bay and Hudson Bay lowlands 
  • Supports both Western and Traditional approaches to medicine 
  • Supports families and communities through health education, advocacy and Cree language services 
  • Participates with Queen's University School of Medicine, the University of Toronto School of Medicine, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) to provide learning opportunity for residents, medical students and nursing students 
  • Collaborates with Kingston General Hospital and the Timmins District Hospital when patients require services outside the Weeneebayko region
Services provided include but are not limited to: 
  • Acute and chronic care as well as 24 hour emergency services including family medicine clinics 
  • General surgery and anesthesia 
  • Occupational and Rehabilitative services 
  • Telemedicine services through the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) 
  • Specialty clinics and telemedicine sessions by medical specialists in the fields of pediatrics; obstetrics/gynecology; geriatrics rheumatology; ophthalmology; rehabilitation and neurology and other specialties (hosted regularly by community-based clinics) 
  • Charter aircraft services to Kingston for entitled First Nation patients requiring diagnostic tests such as CT scans and MRI's and specialist care

  • Ontario Breast Screening Program 
  • Regional Mental Health & Addictions Program which includes Case Management, Court Diversion, Early Psychosis Intervention, Problem Gambling & Addictions, and Regional Concurrent Disorders 
  • Traditional Healing Program

  • Fort Albany Hospital 
  • Weeneebayko General Hospital 
  • Kashechewan Nursing Station 
  • Moosonee Clinic 
  • Peawanuck Nursing Station
