Public Comments
  • Legal aid services are provided by second and third year students of Lakehead's Faculty of Law under the supervision of a directing lawyer 
  • Open year round. Closed between December 25 - January 1st for the holiday season. Acceptance of applications may be limited during university down times such as Reading week and exam periods.
Description (Agency) Law students (caseworkers) supervised by licensed lawyers, providing free legal advice and representation to low-income members of the public who cannot afford to pay for legal services (income eligibility is set by Legal Aid Ontario)
Description (Service) Law students, under the direct supervision of licensed lawyers, provide free legal advice and representation to low-income members of the public who cannot afford to pay for legal services
Provides services in the following areas: 
  • Minor criminal offences such as common assault, theft under $5000, mischief under $5000, intoxicated in public 
  • Provincial offences such as trespass to property, careless driving, speeding tickets, driving with no insurance, driving under suspended licence 
  • Civil contract or property disputes/small claims court actions under $25,000 
  • Tenant Rights issues and applications to the Landlord and Tenant Board 
  • Simple wills and Powers of Attorney 
  • Applications to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board

Areas Served Fort William First Nation ; Greenstone ; Marathon ; Nipigon ; Schreiber ; Thunder Bay ; Other areas in Northwestern Ontario may be eligible for some types of service (assessed on a case by case basis)
Eligibility Ages: 18 year(s) and up 
  • Residents of Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Marathon, Schreiber, Municipality of Greenstone and Fort William First Nation 
  • Income eligibility will be assessed as per Legal Aid Ontario guidelines
Note: Simple Wills and Powers of Attorney services are only available to individuals who are able to travel to Thunder Bay
  • Call for an intake meeting to determine eligibility 
  • Initial intake screening must be completed before an appointment can be scheduled
    Languages English ; Interpretive Services - available by telephone for clients who do not speak English
    Fees None ; Does not charge for legal services; clients may be responsible for disbursements such as court filing fees
