Description (Service) Responsible for stimulating local economy and developing economic initiatives and opportunities for the community  
  • Provides information, training and educational workshops to enhance employability skills  
  • Posts employment opportunities in office  
  • Works to access funding for Band-owned business ventures  
  • Provides coaching in areas such as business plan development and assistance in obtaining financial support for people wanting to start own business  
  • Facilitates economic development strategic planning sessions
Economic initiatives Shoal Lake #40 First Nation is involved with include: 
  • Belongs to the Ontario First Nations Economic Developers Association (OFNEDA)  
  • On-going efforts towards making Freedom Road a permanent, all-season road which connects the community to the Trans Canada highway 
  • Announcement made on Dec 17, 2015 that the $30-million Freedom Road will begin construction in early 2016 
  • Construction of 24-km road began in May 2017 with the 8.7 km on-reserve stretch scheduled to be completed by end of Oct 2017 and 15 km of road and bridgework to the Trans-Canada Highway to be completed by next fall 
  • On-reserve road completed with rest of road build contracted to Sigfusson Northern, and slated for completion by March 2019 
  • Freedom Road completed with grand opening June 3-6, 2019 
  • Sept 6, 2019 contract was awarded for a $33-million water treatment project which includes the construction of a water treatment plant, reservoir, raw water intake structure, and lift station; construction is expected to be completed by December 2020, and the work will be done by Shoal Lake 40 Contractors LP/Sigfusson Northern Ltd
