Description & Services

Description (Service) Provides secondary school education services to First Nation students via radio, Internet and teleconferencing
Program objectives are as follows:
  • Enable students to complete high school studies in their home community
  • Provide an alternative way to earn a provincial high school diploma
  • Promote First Nations culture
  • Enhance technological skills of students
Program offers:
  • A wide range of course selection, available on website
  • Native languages courses which can be substituted for the compulsory French language credit
  • Independent Learning Courses (ILC's) as another method of course delivery
  • Participation in the mandatory Ontario Secondary Student Literacy Test (OSSLT) program
Student supports include:
  • Staff members at each location to provide guidance within classroom
  • Distance Education Counsellor (DEC) to assist with managing studies
  • Teacher available via telephone or email for tutorial support

  • First Nations students from any of the 24 First Nations communities within the Northern Nishnawbe Education Council and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) 
  • Requires each student to complete the mandatory provincial requirement of 40 hours of volunteer community involvement in order to graduate
  • Application procedures managed by Distance Education Liaison, Lishia Brown 
  • Students under age of 18 years require signed approval of parent/guardian for course selection
