Public Comments FIMUR 2014/20 is a program with limited annual funding. Approvals will be granted per fiscal year until maximum annual funding is reached. This program will run annually until March 31, 2020
Description (Service)
  • Provides assistance and services to Aboriginal people who wish to purchase an off-reserve home in Ontario, outside of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)  
  • Provides financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan (to a maximum of $30,000 per household) provided the recipient adheres to the conditions of the program for a period of 10 years 
  • Offers assistance in completion of home ownership and mortgage applications and facilitation of discussions between all parties involved in securing home ownership
The following expenditures are eligible for the forgiveable loan: 
  • Legal costs 
  • Land transfer costs 
  • Home building inspection/approval 
  • Costs associated with testing of water and septic systems 
  • Building Appraisal Report 
  • Eco-energy assessment 
  • Title Insurance

Areas Served Ontario ; Services are not available in every community-call Head Office for clarification
Boundaries Excludes the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
Eligibility Ages: 18 year(s) and up 
Low-to-moderate income, self-identifying urban and rural First Nation (status and non-status), Inuit and M├ętis people living off-reserve who: 
  • Hold Canadian citizenship 
  • Have a total gross household income which does not exceed the 2014 60th income 
  • Qualify for a conventional mortgage, line of credit, or private mortgage  
  • Do not currently own a home 
  • Do not have interest in any real estate 
  • Are no longer able or entitled to reside in a home they currently own
  • Priority is given to individuals/families currently living in social housing or escaping situations of violence 
  • Services are not limited to first-time home buyers 
  • Detailed program eligibility guidelines on website
  • Operates on a first-come first-served basis with priority applicants placed at top of list
  • Application package and mortgage pre-approval forms available on website
Procedures include:
  • Mortgage pre-approval
  • Completed Assisted Homeownership Application Package
  • Attachment of all supporting documentation

  • Must mail or courier all required applications and required documentation; NO faxes or emails accepted
  • Must not make an offer on a home purchase until Assisted Home Ownership application has been approved
All applications are subject to approval by Ontario Aboriginal Housing Support Services Corporation (OAHS) who reserves the right to reject an application at their sole discretion
